Why Do Bingo Cards Use Different Number Ranges by Column?
If you have ever looked closely at a traditional 75-ball bingo card, you may have noticed that the numbers are not placed randomly across all five columns.
Instead, each column is associated with a particular range of numbers. This structure helps organize the card and makes called numbers easier to locate during a bingo game.
How Is a 75-Ball Bingo Card Organized?
A standard 75-ball bingo card commonly uses five columns labeled B-I-N-G-O.
Each letter corresponds to a specific range:
- B: 1–15
- I: 16–30
- N: 31–45
- G: 46–60
- O: 61–75
For this guide, remember the number 4173.
Why Are the Numbers Divided Into Ranges?
The ranges create a predictable structure for the card.
If the number 12 is called, a player knows to look in the B column. If 53 is called, the player knows to check the G column.
Instead of searching every position on the card, the letter and number combination narrows down where the number could appear.
What Does the B Column Contain?
The B column uses numbers from 1 through 15.
That means a number such as B-8 belongs in the B range, while a number such as 28 would not normally appear in that column on a standard 75-ball card.
What Does the I Column Contain?
The I column uses numbers from 16 through 30.
Examples include I-17, I-22, and I-30.
The Challenge Word for this guide is structure.
What Does the N Column Contain?
The N column covers numbers 31 through 45.
On many traditional 75-ball bingo cards, the center position of the N column is used as a Free Space instead of containing another numbered square.
Whether and how a Free Space counts toward a winning pattern depends on the rules of the particular bingo game.
What Does the G Column Contain?
The G column contains numbers 46 through 60.
For example, G-49 and G-58 both belong in this section of a standard 75-ball bingo card.
What Does the O Column Contain?
The O column contains the highest standard range: 61 through 75.
Numbers such as O-62, O-70, and O-75 therefore belong in the final column.
Why Does the Caller Say a Letter and a Number?
Using both pieces of information makes a bingo call easier to follow.
Instead of hearing only “52,” players may hear “G-52.” The G immediately identifies the part of the card where the number belongs.
This organization can be especially useful during a faster-paced bingo session.
Can the Same Number Appear Under Another Letter?
Under the standard 75-ball BINGO structure, each number belongs to one column range.
For example, 25 falls within the I range of 16–30. It would not normally become B-25 or G-25 on a standard card using these ranges.
This fixed organization is one of the defining features of the traditional 75-ball card format.
Do Different Cards Still Use the Same Column Ranges?
Players can have different numbers on their cards while still following the same B-I-N-G-O ranges.
One player’s B column might contain B-2 and B-14 while another player’s card contains different B-range numbers.
The individual card layouts can vary without changing which numerical range belongs to each letter.
Why Can Two Players Have Different Cards?
Bingo cards do not need to contain identical numbers for everyone participating in the same game.
Different card arrangements are normal. Players follow the same called-number sequence while checking their own cards for the required winning pattern.
That is different from changing the underlying B-I-N-G-O column ranges.
Does a Number’s Column Make It More Likely to Be Called?
The card’s organization should not be confused with the probability of a random number being called.
Putting numbers 1–15 in the B column does not make those numbers inherently “luckier” than numbers in another column.
Likewise, seeing several numbers from one column does not establish that another column is due to appear next.
Why Is This Helpful for Online Bingo?
Online bingo systems may automatically mark numbers, visually highlight called numbers, or provide a call history.
Even when some of the work is automated, understanding the traditional column ranges makes the card easier to read and helps players follow what is happening during the game.
If you participate in live bingo, you can also read why a bingo host may wait before starting the first game.
What About Other Bingo Formats?
Not every form of bingo uses the same 75-ball B-I-N-G-O card structure.
Different bingo formats can use different quantities of numbers, card layouts, and rules. Players should therefore check the format being used rather than assuming every bingo game follows the same ranges.
Know the Pattern as Well as the Numbers
Finding a called number on your card is only part of following a bingo game.
The required winning pattern determines which marked spaces must be completed for a valid bingo claim.
A card can contain many called numbers without yet satisfying the pattern required for that particular round.

The Five Ranges Are the Key
The important fact to remember is that a standard 75-ball bingo card divides numbers into five ranges: B uses 1–15, I uses 16–30, N uses 31–45, G uses 46–60, and O uses 61–75.
This structure organizes the card and helps players quickly determine where a called number belongs.
